Guy Story

Songwriter and guitarist Guy Story spent the better part of three decades deeply embedded in the technology industry—working for the likes of Bell Laboratories, Amazon, and, as the founding CTO at Audible, Guy had an early footprint in startup culture, digital media, and rights management, all of which have become major touchstones in the current landscape of the music industry. During his time working in technology, his lifetime fascination with music and playing guitar had been squarely relegated to the ranks of hobby, a romantic idea dating back to his early teens that the Mississippi native would revisit periodically over the years but never allow himself to embrace fully.

It wasn’t until experiencing what some might call a late-in-life moment of clarity that Story realized it was now-or-never between him and making music. Much to his surprise, the impulse to facilitate stories—whether it be in the form of writing code or constructing a melody—weren’t altogether different. As it turns out, the narrative impulse just happened to be a part of his DNA.

Buoyed by a newfound desire to make his music happen—and encouraged by the support of his family—Story set about putting together a band, a process that involved reaching out to friends and no small amount of trial and error. While putting together the band’s soon-to-be-final lineup, Story focused his energy on writing songs and fleshing out over a dozen song ideas, some of which he’d been carrying around for years. By the spring of 2016, roughly 6 months after deciding to go full-throttle on music, Storytown played their first ever gig. As of this writing, Storytown has released over 50 songs, including 12 from their debut album Welcome to Storytown.

Stories from Storytown is an engaging evening of music and conversation hosted by Storytown bandleader Guy Story. This unique series mixes storytelling with live music from Guy's namesake band Storytown. Storytellers include musicians, book authors, journalists, managers, album photographers, and more. In conversation with Guy, each storyteller shares their personal experiences in music over the year, and Storytown plays live in between the stories. Past guests include Daphne Ruben-Vega (Mimi in the musical Rent, Daniela in the movie The Heights), guitarist extraordinaire Gary Lucas (co-writer, with Jeff Buckley, of the song Grace), Danny Goldberg (CEO of both Warner Bros. and Mercury Records, manager for Nirvana), and David Browne (Rolling Stone Magazine reporter and author of the acclaimed Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital).
